China scholars have emphasised the importance of maintaining stability and securing tensions maintenance around the contested territories of the South China Sea.
Zhao Hongwei’s (赵宏伟), has been prompting Beijing to put an immediate end to the Philippines’ “provocations” by radical means.
On the other hand, Wu Shicun (吴士存), challenges this type of action. His policy recommendations come in the wake of recent talks aimed at defusing last month’s escalation of hostilities around the Second Thomas Shoal.
Wu urges his government to present Manila with an ultimatum, demanding the withdrawal of its marines from the reef within a specific timeframe. If it does not comply, the area should be blockaded until the marines surrender. Following this, the decaying Sierra Madre should be dismantled and removed from the site.
However, there are positive signalling during the latest round of the China-Philippines Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the South China Sea on July 2nd and the opening of new communication channels between the two sides to mitigate flashpoints of the Second Thomas Shoal and the South China Sea.
